Pertussis (Whooping Cough)

Jack had been mildly sick when I left for Boston. He got a cold that left his asthma in a flare. He was coughing a lot--an asthma cough. (Or so we thought....) When I returned from Boston, his cough had worsened, so I took him to the doctor that Monday. We weren't able to get in with his Allergist, so we saw his regular pediatrician. That was really a blessing in disguise because she thought to test him for Pertussis as it had been "going around" in Rochester. She didn't think that's what he had---seemed like a classic asthma flare---but just to be safe, she swabbed him.

We went about our business, upping his nebs, and later that afternoon, we got a call from the clinic. That obviously wasn't good news! Sure enough, he had Pertussis. WHAT?!@# How could he get that? He had been vaccinated. How could he get this illness that had supposedly been eradicated in current times? The nurse explained that he had to have been within three feet of whoever passed it on to him. And within that three feet, the person had to cough directly on him with him inhaling the droplets. I just couldn't imagine where he caught it. And I was so disgusted!!!

With a Pertussis diagnosis, that meant that the whole family had to be treated by antibiotics as precaution and prevention of any spread. Not only did the family need to be treated, anyone who had spent any amount of time with Jack needed to be treated too. That meant Mom and Dad had to be treated as they'd been caring for him while I was in Boston and also our babysitter who had been babysitting a couple mornings a week. What a nightmare! Once we all started the antibiotics we were advised to stay inside away from anyone. Awesome to be quarantined in the middle of summer!

The nightmare only got worse as Jack's cough got worse---much worse. The cough started out as a nagging "asthma" cough. It turned into the true "whooping" cough. The cough goes on and on and then while trying to catch your breath, you "whoop" air in. Horrible. Jack had a couple really bad spells, one of which he quit breathing and I took him to the ER. I just couldn't understand how they could do NOTHING to help him. In fact, they told me we should feel "lucky" he hasn't broken ribs from coughing so hard! Then they told me the most dreaded news of all---THIS COULD GO ON FOR 2-3 MONTHS!!!

This disease seems to ebb and flow. He seems better only to catch a small cold and have a set back. When he gets too active or mad, he has coughing fits. I think the most frustrating part is that he tends to puke with the bad spells. Because he's just trying to focus on getting his breath back, he's not too concerned about where he pukes. That leads to a lot of clean up on my part. Sigh. He's been sleeping on a makeshift "dog bed" next to my bed on the floor. I was popping up way too much to make sure he was still breathing after the spells, so it's a lot easier on all of us if I can just roll over and look down to see he's still breathing. We're looking forward to the day soon when he's back in his own bed!

Last week the boys started at their new daycare. It was horrible telling Kari that he has these horrible coughing spells BUT HE'S NOT CONTAGIOUS! She's been a real trooper and helps him through the spells and has gotten him to puke in the bucket more regularly! Now that he's over his latest cold, I do really think he's on the mend---ever so slowly.

Boston Trip to meet Ella! (sans family)

At the beginning of August, I had the opportunity to go to Boston (ALONE) to go visit my sister, Anna, her husband, Jake and my new niece, Ella! I left on a Wednesday and returned home on Sunday. It was a much needed trip as full time mommyhood was getting to me! The trip was wonderful. We had beautiful weather and it was wonderful to spend time with Anna and Ella! Ella was SOOOOO much lighter than Luke! That was wonderful, too, as I was nursing my back back to health.

Meet Miss Ella!

Jay's 15th Heart Transplant Anniversary!

Jay celebrated his 15th Heart Transplant Anniversary August 2, 2011. We just celebrated as a family. The boys and I made him a cake and cupcakes for work! We celebrate the anniversary like a birthday! It's so hard for Jay and me to even believe that it's been 15 years. It seems like yesterday yet it doesn't. Usually Jay has his "annual exam" near his anniversary in late July or August. This year he's pushed it back to October because things at work have been so busy. I always like to have that behind us so we can say "another clean bill of health!" This year we'll have to wait a bit longer. I'm sure things are going well as he feels great and he's running 5-6 times per week. He's in great shape and his lost his 15 "baby pounds"!!!

My boys....

Jack's First Trip to Target Field

We have taken Jack to a handful of Twins games, but this was his first trip to Target Field. We had the opportunity to hop on a bus a friend arranged and got three tickets and the bus ride for only $70! Pretty inexpensive! Jack had a blast on his first bus ride and he really enjoyed Target Field too.

Jack got "Go Twins" painted on his face!

The bus arrived pretty early, so we had time to kill. Jack kept wondering when the game was going to start, so he was less than thrilled in some of these pictures!

Some shots of Target Field and Jack's favorite player, Joe Mauer!

On the way out of the ball park, we stopped for a picture in the gold glove!

BTW, the Twins lost and Luke was with G & G Rickert!

Luke's 9 Month Pictures (July)

Because of weather, we actually ended up doing Luke's 9 month pictures two different days. One day for indoor shots and the next for outdoor shots with Jack! As always, they turned out cute!

These pictures are in an outfit that his "Grand" Aunt Geri gave him!

Only one more session with Mandy before she takes a "sabbatical"! So sad.
